San Antonio Leads the Market in Retail Job Growth

What is one of the topics we hear about most these day when we turn on the national news?  Jobs, Jobs, Jobs…And specifically, how there needs to be more of them!

Well, according to a new analysis of U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, San Antonio is doing pretty darn good when it comes to creating new retail jobs!  In fact, San Antonio is among the top cities in the United States!

The study took a look at retail job creation over the past 5 years (2005-2011) and out of the nation’s 100 biggest metropolitan areas, only 14 have more retail jobs today than they did five years ago.  Texas cities claimed the top 4 spots…McAllen, Austin, Houston & San Antonio!

Over the 5 year period, San Antonio added 96,100 retail jobs, which translates to a growth rate of 4.12 percent.

“The retail sector plays a key role in any economic recovery. Here’s the theory: If consumers spend more money, stores and restaurants will hire more workers, and conditions are bound to improve.” (bizjournals.com)

This is just one reason we are continuing to see a steady real estate market here in San Antonio.   Of course it doesn’t hurt that we have fantastic schools, great shopping & dining, and tons of fun stuff for all to enjoy!

Way to go San Antonio!

US 281 / Loop 1604 Interchange Groundbreaking – North San Antonio

US 281 / Loop 1604 Interchange Groundbreaking – North San Antonio

US 281 and Loop 1604 is a very busy intersection in San Antonio.  Let’s face it…traffic can be a nightmare at certain times of the day there!  The 281/1604 intersection has also ranked at the top of the list for accidents for many years…not just for San Antonio, but in all of Bexar County!

What were they thinking when they built this??  Let’s take two major roadways in this growing city of San Antonio and require drivers to exit, then stop at a light, turn, then enter the other highway…Well, it is just not cutting it anymore!  Drivers are frustrated & fed up with the stop & go traffic and the waiting & waiting!

Good news…relief is on the way!  4 non-toll direct connectors will be built linking 281 & 1604, including the construction of a left hand exit from US 281 North to Loop 1604 East and West.

You may be wondering…”Where is the money coming from?”

As part of the Federal Stimulus Program passed in 2009, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA), the Alamo RMA (Regional Mobility Authority) received $140 Million in funding to construct the four non-toll direct connectors between HWY 281 and Loop 1604 on the north side of San Antonio.

Let’s get this started already, right?  Well, the wait is almost over!  This coming Wednesday – March 2nd, 2011 is the US 281 / Loop 1604 Interchange Groundbreaking!  The event gets underway at 10:30 am and will be held in the Legacy Shopping Center Parking Lot infront of Sportsman’s Warehouse.

San Antonio Population Growth – 2010 Census Reports San Antonio Larger than Dallas

San Antonio Population Growth – 2010 Census Reports San Antonio Larger than Dallas

The U.S. Census Bureau recently released population information for 2010 & boy how San Antonio is growing!

According the the Census Bureau report, San Antonio has grown 16% in the last decade (between 2000 and 2010) from 1.14 million to a population of nearly 1.33 million people!

When the census reports came out a decade ago, San Antonio ranked 3rd in population in Texas, behind Houston & Dallas.  Houston population increaded 7.5% over the 10 year period & has help on to thier top spot…However, Dallas only saw growth of 0.8% to 1.2 million, allowing San Antonio to slide into 2nd.  Now, if you look at the Dallas Metroplex & include the surrounding cities of Fort Worth & Arlington, the Metroplex area would be larger.  But, comparing actuall city to city, San Antonio can now definitely be proud of being the 2nd largest city in Texas!

Major Julian Castro responded to the Census data:  “San Antonio is a look at America’s tomorrow. As a diverse, economically vibrant city, San Antonio and cities like it represent the new face of the American Dream.”

We recently discussed increases in San Antonio Housing Market Statistics and it is clear that not only are our residents moving within the city, but many are moving to San Antonio from other cities & states to take advantage of all that San Antonio has to offer…From the available jobs, to great schools, to beautiful weather, to reasonable home prices…the list goes on!

San Antonio Ranks Among Top in Global Recovery…

San Antonio ranks among the top cities in the Nation in a global study performed by the Brookings Institution Metropolitan Policy Program which ranked 150 cities on their level of recovery from the recession.   The study included 50 cities in the United States, 50 in Europe, and 50 other from around the world.

Out of 150, San Antonio ranked #51.  Out of the US cities, San Antonio came in at #11!  Also in the top 15 US cities, were Austin (#1 in the US), Houston & Dallas.

For those of us living here…this comes as no surprise.  It seems like nearly every week, we hear the news of a major company (Toyota, Medtronic, Whataburger, Petco…) coming to San Antonio, providing more jobs & industry.  All of this only adds to our low cost of living,  exceptional school systems, beautiful weather & friendly neighbors…

San Antonio, Texas…what a great place to call home!
